Extraordinary Home of the Week: Lagniappe Estate & Vineyard in St. Helena
As far as unique wine country estates go, this French country estate immediately caught my eye; it’s also a working vineyard.
Encompassing five acres in Napa Valley’s picturesque St. Helena, Lagniappe Estate offers “a touch of New Orleans soul,” reflecting the life the owners once lived in the New Orleans Garden District. (In fact, Lagniappe is a French Cajun word meaning “something a little extra,” they once told the Napa Valley Register.) That little something extra could be the three dedicated vineyard acres, planted with about 5,000 Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Or perhaps it’s the majestic views surrounding the estate, from stately Mount St. Helena to the Mayacamus and Vaca mountain ranges.
As for the estate itself, Pierce describes it as “elegant yet comfortable,” with 4,084 square feet of living space encompassing a main house, carriage house, working potting shed, pool, spa, pool cabana, wine tasting room and architectural plans for 2,500 bottle wine cellar and an equipped workout room. There are three bedrooms and three and a half baths.
Extensive use of glass opens the 600 square foot kitchen and dining area with visions of vineyard, mountains, patio, pool, courtyard and gardens. “Fruits of the Valley” are hand painted by artist Angela Terrell on lighted soffit above center island.
Like many wine country estates, its focus is as much on the exterior spaces as the interior spaces. Crafted of Napa stone, stucco and slate, the two-story main house is elegantly appointed with copper clad windows and doors, handcrafted Bevolo copper gas lamps (more of that ‘Nawlins flair) and stately columns. Inspiring terraces, patios and balconies take full advantage of the unobstructed vineyard views.
The grounds themselves—professionally designed and landscaped with gorgeous rose gardens (there are about 500 bushes planted), fountains and statuary standing amidst 50 old-growth Redwoods—are also magical, capturing those prized moments of human connection with nature. A bocce court is primed for entertaining. You can practically imagine hosting outdoor parties and barbecues from spring to harvest season here.
